Illegal Immigration: Drugs, Gangs and Crime
Paramilitary groups trading fire with U.S. agents. Kidnappings and murders of U.S. citizens. Members of al-Qaida, Hezbollah and other terrorist organizations infiltrating the border on a routine basis. We are not talking about Iraq – but Texas. One of the clearest indicators the United States has lost control of its southwest border is the ease with which thousands of tons of drugs and millions of illegal aliens are crossing the U.S. border on an annual basis. This open borders policy has opened the door to more than just cheap labor. The presence of millions of undocumented persons in our country has provided a perfect cover for various forms of criminal activity, ranging from drug trafficking to prostitution to identity theft.
-This is only an excerpt from an article that explains the increase in crime, drugs, and gangs as a result of illegal aliens. The article goes on to explain that illegal immigrants are bringing illegal drugs into the United States and some may be involved in the drug trade. In addition to an increase in drugs, there is also an increase in identity theft. The article explains, "Many illegal aliens are also resorting to identify theft. During a recent raid at Smithfield Foods in the Bladen County town of Tar Heel, investigators found that 86 percent of workers arrested for immigration violations had also stolen identities from American citizens." This shows that these illegal aliens are using fake documents and posing as other people in order to go about the United States. All in all, illegal immigration is causing an increase in crime, violence, gangs, drugs, and other illegal crimes but the problem is that it is difficult to prosecute illegal immigrants because they can easily flee the country. People may think that illegal immigration is not harmful to others but in fact it is, and if we are lenient on people who break immigration laws then people who commit other crimes will expect our government to be lenient on them. Our country rests upon the prinicple of freedom but with that freedom we need laws and restrictions in order to ensure the safety of legal citizens and it is important that we stick by those laws.
Molly,
ReplyDeleteI like all the arguements that you express in your post but is it just the illegal aliens that commit crimes? Or are Americans also increasing the crime rate? Also, what about the drugs that are already here in the U.S.? Where do those come in play? And to what criminal extent does it take to send immigrants back to their country?
